How To Transcribe An Interview

Almost all of us are engaged in some task or the other to earn our bread and butter. The employees have to undergo verbal interviews with their employers to assess their capabilities. It is just not possible to remember all the questions and answers or other aspects during such interaction between the interviewer and the interviewee. It is the interview transcription, i.e. writing out the contents of the conversation that is helpful at later times.

How to transcribe the interview – Those interested to choose transcription as their lifetime career should adhere to the following simple points:

Careful listening, editing and typing with patience

Be informed to listen to the entire dialogue between the interviewer and the interviewee in careful manners. Do concentrate on the issue without losing your attention to something else. Careful editing is the next point that must be followed in wise manners. The next thing that is expected from you is errorless typing. Do not go so fast that you commit typing errors that may lead to complications. Do not do all this in hurried manners and be patient for the same.


Note down the name of the interviewer, interviewee, day & date and the particular time as regards the interview. Its location should also be described.

Paragraphing and punctuations etc – Make use of pedal stop for stopping and starting the tape. Repeat it several times if you are confused. Do not forget to transcribe all words carefully. Guess intelligently if you come across some confusing words that may be inserted in brackets to apprise the concerned persons. Be wise to insert paragraphs whenever new ideas are there during the interview. Space the interviewer and the interviewee when they speak to each other.


It is good to listen once again to the tape after finishing the original draft. Correct the errors if any. Abbreviations may be spelt out and the punctuations should also be clarified. Grammatical or other mistakes should also be corrected. Do not repeat words like ‘I mean’ or ‘you know’ etc. Terms like ‘um’, ‘uh’ etc should also be edited. Spellings etc should be checked.

Saving – Do save the contents of the transcribed stuff in safe files so that they could be used in future.
